Sulabh International founder Dr Bindeshwar Pathak honoured with Nikkei Asia Prize

The founder of Sulabh International, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, has been honoured with the Nikkei Asia Prize in Japan for his contribution to Asia’s development.

He was described as an Indian social reformer tackling two of his country’s biggest challenges — poor hygiene and discrimination.  The prizes will be awarded on June 13 in Tokyo in Japan. He was among three who were conferred with this award.

(i) Nikkei Inc. is one of the largest media corporations in Japan. 

(ii) It has been presenting the awards since 1996 to honour people in Asia who have made significant contributions in one of the three areas: Economic and Business Innovation, Science, Technology and Environment and Culture and Community.


India Wins U-16 Four-Nation Football Tournament in Serbia

Indian Under-16 National Team was crowned champions of the Four-Nation Tournament held in Serbia after the Indian Colts defeated Tajikistan.

The Indian U-16 football team drew 0-0 with the hosts, defeated Jordan 2-1 before beating Tajikistan in the final. The Indian boys took lead in the fifth minute when Gibson lobbed the ball over the opposing custodian. Two minutes later, Sailo took advantage of a scramble inside the opposition box and doubled the lead.


Indore, Bhopal & Chandigarh are Top 3 cleanest cities of India

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Puri released the results of the Swacch Surveskshan 2018. Indore has emerged as the cleanest city again in India for the second consecutive year.

Bhopal has been ranked as India’s second cleanest city for two years in a row and Chandigarh was ranked as the third cleanest city, moving up from Rank 11 in 2017.

Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh named as the fastest moving big city of the Swachh Survekshan 2018,  moving up to Rank 36 from the previous 351, in 2017. On the other hand, Jharkhand has been declared the best performing state, followed by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.

This cleanliness survey was undertaken by 2700 assessors between January 4 to March 10, 2018. Last year the survey was conducted in 434 cities. This year, the survey was conducted in more than 4,200 cities.

Guwahati: India’s first solar powered railway station

Guwahati now has India’s first railway station run by solar power. The project cost is estimated to be Rs 6.7 crore, as per Indian Railways.  The project of installing solar panels was commissioned last year in April 2017.

The project aimed at reducing carbon-footprint as well as cut down power costs drastically. It will also save Rs 67 lakh worth of electricity.

Nearly 2352 solar modules with a capacity of generating 700 kwp has been set up over the roof of the Guwahati railway station. The average power generation capacity per day is 2048 KWh. The solar panels till date have generated a total of 7,96,669 KWH of electricity.


Environment Ministry launches Green Skill Development Programme

The Union Environment Ministry launched the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP), with an aim to train over 5.5 lakh workers in environment and forest sectors in the country.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan has said that the GSDP aims to get 80, 000 people imparted green skills and in filling the skill gaps in the environment sector. He pointed out that the objective of GSDP is skilling the youth of India, especially dropouts and in increasing the availability of skilled workforce. 

FACTFILE – Green Skill Development Programme

(i) The Programme was initially launched in 2017 as a pilot project in 10 districts only wherein 154 youths, mainly school dropouts, were trained as parataxonomists and biodiversity conservationists. 

(ii) Now the programme is launched on a large scale around 80000 youths will be trained at 80 institutions in next one year. 
(iii) Over 2 lakh youths will be trained by 2020 and by 2021, a total over 5.5 lakh youths will be trained as green skilled workers. 

(iv) Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan also launched a related mobile app ‘GSDP-ENVIS’ to boost employability and entrepreneurship of the youth in the country. The app can be used for information and for applying to the courses.


First Para-National Games to be Held Under Khelo India Scheme

The inaugural National Para Games, on the lines of National Games for able-bodied athletes, will be held under the Khelo India Scheme in June-July 2018 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Key Facts

(i)The Paralympic Committee of India will be responsible for the technical conduct of the game and the sports ministry will fund the games under Khelo India Scheme.

(ii) The Games will be held for the age group of 16 to 40 (men and women) in 10 disciplines namely para-athletics, badminton, chess, blind judo, para powerlifting, shooting para-sport, para-swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing.

(iii) Each Category will have several classifications as per the guidelines of Paralympic Committee Of India (PCI)

(iv) The events will be held at four venues— Kanteerava Stadium, Kanteerava Indoor  Stadium, SAI centre Bangaluru, and Karnataka Badminton Association Stadium.

(v)  There will be 416 medals events (220 for men, 180 for women and 16 fixed) while the total number of participants has been fixed at 2192 (1311 for men, 837 for women and 44 for mixed events). Para athletics will have the most medal events (167) followed by para swimming with (135) medals.
