Nipah Virus (NiV) Infection found in Kerala

The state of Kerala has been detected with Nipah virus.  Its remains were found in blood and body fluid samples of 2 infected persons who died of viral fever in Kerala’s coastal Kozhikode area.

FACTFILE – Nipah Virus (NiV) Infection

(I) Nipah virus infection is zoonotic disease that reasons severe disease in both animals and humans. Fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, are natural host of the virus.

(ii) The virus is communicated via direct contact with infected bats, pigs.

(iii)  The virus can be transmitted to human beings by coming into direct contact with these animals.   It can cause acute respiratory syndrome, breathing trouble, brain
inflammation, fever, headache, drowsiness and delirium. Patient can also suffer enter coma within 48 hours.

(iv) There is no vaccine for disease either for humans or animals. The main treatment for those infected is concentrated supportive care and supportive medicines. In disease infected areas, fruits strewn on the ground should not be eaten.

(v) The disease first broke out in Malaysia’s Kampung Sungai in 1998.


Asha Bhosle conferred with Banga Bibhusan award

Legendary singer Asha Bhosle conferred with the highest civilian award of West Bengal, the Banga Bibhushan, by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at a function held in Kolkata.

Justice Shyamal Kumar Sen (retd), Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee and writer Samaresh Majumdar  were also conferred with this award.

In 2011, Mamata Banerjee had instituted the Banga Bibhushan and Banga Bhushan awards in recognition of the services of eminent personalities from their respective fields.


Shivangi Pathak becomes the youngest Indian woman to scale Mount Everest

Haryana’s 16-year-old Shivangi Pathak becomes the youngest Indian woman to scale Mount Everest from the Nepal side.

She was inspired by Arunima Sinha, the first Indian amputee to climb Mt Everest. In 2014, 13 year old Malavath Poorna from India had climbed Mt Everest from Tibet side and became youngest girl in the world to summit at Everest.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2018 observed

International Day for Biological Diversity observed across the world every year on May 22 with the aim to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

The theme of International Day for Biological Diversity 2018 was ‘Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity’ as the year 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

  • The Convention on Biological Diversity came into force on December 29, 1993 and since then each anniversary of this date was designated the International Day for Biological Diversity. The United Nations General Assembly, by its resolution 55/201 of December 20, 2000, proclaimed 22 May as the International Day for Biological Diversity.
  • The International Day for Biological Diversity falls within the scope of the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Russia launches world’s first floating nuclear power plant

Russia launched ‘Akademik Lomonosov’, the world’s first floating nuclear power plant at the St Petersburg shipyard. The plant is currently towed to a port town called Murmansk in northwest Russia. The plant will be loaded with fuel before being towed to the Arctic Circle called Pevek, where it will begin generating power in mid-2019.

This plant is to be the first of a fleet of floating nuclear power stations to be stationed in the Russian Arctic.

The 144-by-30-meter barge holds two reactors with two 35 megawatt nuclear reactors that are similar to those used to power icebreaker ships. It can produce enough electricity to power a town of 200,000 residents, far more than the 5,000 living in Pevek.


Bala Prasath Wins Formula Junior Racing Series 2018 Championship

Coimbatore racer Bala Prasath won the Formula Junior Racing Series 2018 Championship in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Bala collected a tally of 115 points, winning three races and finishing second in two leapfrogging over Round 1 leader Sohil Shah.Bengaluru’s Sohil clinched the second place in the final round. He could muster only 68 points to finish second.

The Formula Junior Racing Series 2018 Championship organised by MECO Motorsports, was introduced in 2016 to provide a platform to drivers coming out of the winter season to prepare for the National Championships.
