HRD Ministry Launches Samagra Shiksha Scheme

The Union Minister for Human Resource Development,Shri Prakash Javadekar launched the Samagra Shiksha’ – an integrated Scheme for school education. The scheme focuses on improving quality of education, enhancing the Learning outcomes and using technology to empower and teachers.

On this occasion, Shri Anil Swarup, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Ms. Rina Ray, Special Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, and senior officials of the HRD Ministry were also present

Samagra Shiksha is a program that unifies learning from the pre-school to class 12 levels and encapsulates elements of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madhyamk Shiksha Abhiyan and teacher education.

The objectives of the scheme

(i) Provision of quality education.
(ii) Enhancing learning outcomes of students.
(iii) Bridging social and gender gaps in school education and promoting vocationalisation of education.
(iv) Strengthening teacher education institutions like SCERTs and Diets to improve quality of teachers.
(v) Providing annual grant of Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 per school for strengthening of libraries.

Significance of the scheme

(i) It focuses on improving quality of education at all levels by integrating the two T’s – Teachers and Technology. He elaborated that ‘Samagra’ means  a holistic approach to treat education  as a whole and the Scheme is very aptly named as it sees school education holistically without segmenting it into various levels of education.

(ii) is a paradigm shift in conceptual design of school education envisaging to integrate teacher, technology and student learning.He furthersaid thatfocus will be on teachers’ training and technologyto improve the quality education.

(iii) The Scheme envisages active participation of all stakeholders especially the parents/guardians, School ManagementCommittee (SMC) members, community and the statefunctionaries towards the efforts to ensure quality education to children.

(iv) Scheme will focus on strengthening this crucial pillar by making SCERTs and DIETs the nodal agencies for teacher training. 

(v) It will enable reaping the benefits of technology and widening the access of good quality education across all States and UTs and across all sections of the Society.


Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve wins National Biodiversity Award

Arunachal Pradesh’s Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve, (SBVCR) in West Kameng district has won the National Biodiversity Award 2018 for conserving a bird species ‘Bugun Liocichla’, a rare wildlife resources found in the area.

The Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve was honoured with a citation, a memento and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh at Hyderabad. Indi Glow and Sange Norbu Phiang, the leaders of the organisation, received the award.

The SBVCR is an NGO which has been partnering with the state forest department since 2016 in protecting and conserving the 17 sq km area of Singchung Bugun village community reserve adjacent to Eagle-nest Wildlife Sanctuary in West Kameng district.

FACTFILE – Eaglenest Wild life Sanctuary

  • It was formed in October 1989 after bifurcating from the Doimara reserve forest.
  • This sanctuary is spread over about 217 sq kms, with a rich biodiversity second only to the Andes in South America.
  • It is rich in both flora and fauna, with 545 species of birds and various species of plants and animals
  • It is also known for the existence of Bugun liocichla, a bird species presently found only in the sanctuary.  

Tejaswini Strikes Gold at Munich Grand Prix

Former World Shooting Champion Tejaswini Sawant had bagged the gold in the Grand Prix in Munich, Germany. She had won the World Championship gold in prone in 2010 in Munich. 

Tejaswini shot 621.4 to pip compatriot Anjum Moudgil by 0.2 point. Anjum bagged the silver 0.1 point ahead of Olivia Hofmann of Austria.

In men’s rifle prone event, which has recently been taken off the Olympic competition list, Chain Singh bagged the silver after finishing one point behind former Olympic and World champion Matthew Emmons of the U.S.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina Inagurate Bangla Bhavan in Shantiniketan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurate Bangladesh Bhawan at Shanti Niketan in West Bengal.  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present during the inauguration.

The Bangladesh Bhavan features a museum that showcases Rabindranath Tagore’s association with the country, the Liberation War of Bangladesh and Indo-Bangla relations.

It was built at a cost of Rs. 25 crore, which was provided by the Bangladesh government. A fund of Rs. 10 crore would be given to help to maintain the museum premises. The building has been constructed by National Building Construction Corporation.

INSV Tarini Team awarded with Nari Shakti Puraskar 2017

Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi presented the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar2017 to the members of the INSV Tarini team in New Delhi.

The Six-member all-women team comprising of Lt Commander Vartika Joshi,Lt Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lt Commander Swathi Patarpalli ,Lt Aishwarya Bodapatti, Lt SH Vijaya Devi and Lt Payal Gupta have received the Puraskar.

President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Nari Shakti Puraskars on March 8, 2018, on the occasion of International Women’s Day at Rashtrapati Bhawan  However, the award could not be presented to the INSV Tarini team, as they were sailing then.

The crew of the Indian Navy Sailing Vessel ‘Tarini’ is a part of the Indian Navy’s uniqueproject ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’, an all-women team circumnavigating the globe, promoting ocean sailing activities in the Navy and depicting Government of India’s commitment towards women empowerment. 

FACTFILE – Nari Shakti Puraskar  Award

(i) Nari Shakti Puraskar (formally Stree Shakti Puraskar) (Women Power Award) is a series of India’s national honours conferred on individual women for their exceptional achievement.

(ii) It was instituted in 1991 and since then this award has been conferred by President on March 8, 2018, on the occasion of International Women’s Day at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.

(iii) The award carries a cash prize of rupees one lakh (Rs. 100,000) and a certificate.

(iv) The award also recognizes the pioneering contribution of an individual in empowering women and raising women’s issues.


New Governors appointed for Odisha and Mizoram

The President of India Sri Ram Nath Kovind has appointed  Prof. Ganeshi Lal to be the Governor of Odisha and Kummanam Rajasekharan as the governor of Mizoram.

Ganeshi Lal will replace Bihar governor Satya Pal Malik had been given additional charge of Odhisa. Rajasekharan will replace incumbent Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma,  who is completing his tenure on May 28, 2018.

Ganeshi Lal was a professor of Mathematics before becoming member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was a minister in the HVP-BJP government under Chief Minister Bansi Lal from 1996-99 in Haryana.  He is a former president of Haryana BJP unit.

Kummanam Rajasekharan has been the state president Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) in Kerala from 2015-2018. In 1970 he started his activities as an activist of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and in the state Sangh Parivar of Kerala.


Olga Tokarczuk won Man Booker International Prize 2018

Polish novelist Olga Tokarczuk won the prestigious Man Booker International Prize 2018. She won the award for English translation of Polish novel Flights, a novel that charts multiple journeys in time, space and human anatomy. She is one of Poland’s best-known authors.
