Six states sign pact to construct Renukaji Dam in Uttarakhand
  • The Chief Ministers of Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh signed a MoU to construct a Rs 4,596.76 crore dam in Uttarakhand that will provide water to Delhi and other nearby states.
  • The multipurpose dam project, will be built on Giri river in the upper Yamuna basin. The dam will augment water availability for New Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.
  • The project will also generate 40 MW of power during peak flow and is proposed to be executed by state-run Himachal Pradesh Power Corp Ltd (HPPCL).
  • The 90 per cent cost of irrigation and drinking water component of the project i.e. Rs 3,892.83 crore will be provided by the Central government and rest 10 per cent by the six states.

Young social scientists’ meet at Guwahati
  • Thirty-nine young scientists from across the country took part at the young social scientists’ meet, organised by the OKDISCD.
  • The objective of the meet was to provide a platform to the young scholars to present their research works and interact with other scholars and resource persons.
  • The young scholars who took part in the meet were from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Central University of Gujarat, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Pondicherry University, Ambedkar University, National Museum Institute, Tezpur University, Sikkim University, Manipur University, Tripura University, North Eastern Hill University, Nagaland University, Assam University, Dibrugarh University, Cotton University and Gauhati University.
  • Apart from the presentations from the young research scholars, a special lecture was delivered by Chandan Kumar Sarma, Associate Professor in history, Dibrugarh University on the topic ‘Identity, Enumeration and Politics in Colonial Assam’.

India, US discuss cooperation in Indo-Pacific region
  • India and the US discussed cooperation in defence, foreign policy and the Indo-Pacific region during the course of a 2+2 inter-sessional meeting.
  • The inter-sessional meeting was set up following the first ever India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue held last year to make continued progress on bilateral cooperation on cross-cutting defence and foreign policy issues of interest to both sides.
  • The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments as partners and stakeholders for a free, open, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
  • India, the US, Japan and Australia are part of a quad revived in 2017 that seeks to work for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, a region that spreads from the east coast of Japan to the east coast of Africa.
  • The India side was led by Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary (Americas) in the Ministry of External Affairs and S Kumaran, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence while the US delegation was led by Alice Wells, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Randall Schriver, Assistant Secretary of Defence.

Sikkim CM Chamling launches ‘One Family One Job’ scheme
  • Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling launched the ‘One Family One Job’ scheme in Gangktok that provides a government job to every family in the state.
  • Over 12,000 unemployed youths were given appointment letters during the event.
  • The scheme was announced by the Chief Minister last year during the winter session of the State Assembly.

10% upper caste quota bill gets President’s nod
  • President Ram Nath Kovind approved the Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019 that provides 10 per cent reservation to poor general category people in education and government jobs.
  • The Act amends Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution to provide quota to the general category people with a family income of up to Rs 8 lakh per anum.
