Assamese movie ‘Village Rockstars’ is India’s official entry for Oscars 2019
  • Assamese movie ‘Village Rockstars’, directed by Rima Das, is selected as India’s official entry to the 91st Academy Awards under Foreign Language Film category. The Award ceremony will held in February 2019.

  • It is written, edited, co-produced, and directed by Rima Das, it has been set in Das’ own village Kalardiya in Assam’s Chaygaon town.
  • Its story revolves around 10-year-old girl, Dhunu, who dreams to form her own rock band and goes in search of an electric guitar in her village.
  • It had won Best Feature Film ‘Swarna Kamal’ award at 65th National Film Awards.
  • It also has won awards in three other categories: Best Child Artist, Best Location Sound Recordist and Best Editing. 

India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline Project construction Inaugurated
  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated construction of India-Bangladesh Friendship Product Pipeline Project.
  • India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline Project is first such pipeline through which refined diesel will be supplied to Bangladesh from India.

  • The pipeline with capacity of 1 million metric tons per annum, will supply refined diesel to Parbatipur depot from Numaligarh of Assam in India.
  • The project involves construction of a 130-kilometre long pipeline that will connect Siliguri in West Bengal and Parbatipur in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. Only 6 km will be in India and remaining 124 km pipeline will in Bangladesh.
  • The pipeline project will be implemented by Assam-based Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation for Bangladeshi leg of the project.

PM Narendra Modi launches Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Ayushman Bharat -Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)’ in Ranchi. The scheme, touted as the “world’s largest government funded healthcare programme”, targets more than 500 million beneficiaries.
  • The scheme will provide a cover of up to Rs 500,000 per family per year, for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation through a network of Empanelled Health Care Providers (EHCP).
  • The scheme will cover the treatment of more than 1,300 illnesses including cancer, heart disease, kidney and liver disease, diabetes.
  • Treating serious diseases will not only be carried out in government but in many private hospitals also.
  • If someone has any prior illness then the cost of the disease will be raised by this scheme. More than 13,000 hospitals have been associated with the Ayushman Bharat scheme
  • Ayushman Bharat has two components – the creation of 150,000 health and wellness centres, which will provide Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) and the PMJAY, which provides health protection cover to poor and vulnerable families for secondary and tertiary care.

Kamlesh Nilkanth appointed the new Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission
  • Cabinet Appointment Committee has appointed renowned scientist Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas as the new chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and secretary of (DAE).
  • He will succeed Shekhar Basu and will have tenure till May 2021.

BIOGRAPHY – Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas

  • Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas is Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
  • He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from MS University, Vadodara.
  • He has worked for design and analysis of nuclear reactor fuels, thermal hydraulics and stress analysis of critical reactor core components and was also responsible for design and development of a novel fuel for strategic applications.
  • He has been awarded with Indian Nuclear Society Outstanding Service Award 2011, Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award 2006, DAE Awards in years 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013.
  • He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers.

FACTFILE – Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)

  • The Indian Atomic Energy Commission was set up on 3 August 1948 under the erstwhile Department of Scientific Research.
  • A Govt. of India resolution later replaced the commission by “Atomic Energy Commission of India” on 1 March 1958 under the Department of Atomic Energy with more financial and executive powers.
  • Atomic Energy Commission is the governing body of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The DAE is under the direct charge of the Prime Minister.
  • The functions of the Atomic Energy Commission includes to organise research in atomic science in the country; to train, atomic scientists in the country; to promote nuclear research in commission’s own laboratories as well as in India and to undertake prospecting of atomic minerals in India and to extract such minerals for use on industrial scale.

Chief Minister Sarbanadna Sonowal rolled out Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission
  • Chief Minister Sarbanadna Sonowal rolled out the Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission at a programme held at the Veterinary ground, Guwahati.
  • The programme aims to make healthcare accessible and affordable by providing a coverage of Rs 5 lakh to 10 crore economically backward families.
  • Nearly 31 States and Union Territories will implement the programme to enable 50 crore Indians to reap dividends from the scheme.
  • The scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyan’ targets economically backward families from both rural and urban India. Eligible people can avail the benefits in government and listed private hospitals.
  • Assam government aim at touching the lives of40 crore individuals in the State.
  • Under the scheme, 1,350 procedures and 1,394 medical and surgical packages will be covered and treatment can be done in all medical colleges and empanelled nursing homes. On November 1, 2018, all district hospitals will be brought under the purview of the scheme.

India’s first Coal-gasification fertilizer plant to be set up in Odisha
  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the construction work for India’s first Coal-gasification based fertilizer plant with pet coke blending that will come up in Talcher, Odisha.
  • The coal gasification based fertilizer plant is being developed by Talcher Fertilizers Limited (TFL), a joint venture company of GAIL (India) Limited, Coal India Limited, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited (RCFL and Fertilizer Corporation of India Limited

  • The plant will be built at an estimated investment of Rs. 13,000 crore and is targeted to be commissioned by 2022.
  • On completion, this plant will have a capacity of producing 1.27 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) of Neem coated prilled urea using coal and petcoke as feedstock.
  • It will use gas produced from coal, thus reducing dependence on urea and gas imports.
  • It will promote alternative use of domestic coal in environment friendly manner, thereby supporting India’s commitments under CoP 21 Paris Agreement 2016.
  • Neem coated urea reduces leaching of nitrogen into soil and checks diversion of urea from agriculture uses.

India, Russia Air Force conducts joint exercise ‘Aviaindra 18’
  • The first session of the India and Russia joint air exercise ‘Aviaindra 18’ is being held in Lipetsk, Russia from September 17 to 28, 2018. The second session of Aviaindra 18 will be conducted in Jodhpur, Rajasthan (India) from December 10 Dec to 22, 2018.

  • Exercise Aviaindra is an Air Force level exercise between India and Russia.
  • It was conducted for first time in 2014 and since then it is conducted bi-annually (twice a year) in both countries.
  • The aim of this exercise is focused towards anti-terrorist operations in bi-lateral scenario.

Microsoft, DSCI launch programme to skill women in cybersecurity
  • Microsoft India partnered with the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) to launch a programme aimed at fostering talent and building a pool of women cybersecurity professionals in the country.
  • As part of the three-year programme called the “CyberShikshaa” 1 000 women from underserved communities will be trained in ten locations across the country and offered employment opportunities.
  • CyberShikshaa is significant in more ways than one. It will empower women technologists ensure a growth driven livelihood for them and increase the participation of women in the industry
  • According to NASSCOM the strength of the women workforce in the IT-ITeS industry currently stands at 34 per cent.
  • CyberShikshaa will develop a comprehensive ecosystem and evangelise women to harness the opportunities of cybersecurity as a career.
  • In addition to establishing a strong training network with competent trainers and infrastructure it will work to facilitate partnerships amongst government industry and academia.
