Teachers Day 2018 celebrated in India on 5th September
  • Teachers Day is celebrated on September 5th to commemorate the birth day of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President and the second President of India.
  • Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a respected Academic before he got into politics. He was a Professor at many colleges and even represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities of the British Empire and the International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University.
  • He was Principal at Harris Manchester College, Oxford and would lecture the University of Oxford students on Comparative Religion.

4th International Ayurveda Congress held in Leiden, Netherlands
  • Fourth International Ayurveda Congress (IAvC) was held in Leiden, Netherlands from September 1 to 2, 2018. It was inaugurated by Minister of State, (IC), for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik. The Congress was jointly organized by International Maharishi Ayurveda Foundation, Netherlands; All India Ayurvedic Congress, New Delhi and International Academy of Ayurveda, Pune in association with Indian Embassy in Netherlands.
  • The congress focused on promotion and propagation of Ayurveda in Netherlands and its neighboring countries of Europe. On sidelines of this congress, Indian Embassy had also organized a special seminar titled “India-Netherlands collaboration in Healthcare, including Ayurveda”.

  • India has a long history and culture running over 5000 years of using traditional medicines for health care and developing them with modern scientific outlook.
  • AYUSH is acronym of tradition medical systems that are being practiced in India such as Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy and Sowa Rigpa (Traditional Tibetan medicine) and other Indigenous medicine systems.
  • Govt of India created the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) in 1995, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • AYUSH received its current name in March 2003. The Ministry of AYUSH was formed with effect from 9 November 2014 by elevation of the Department of AYUSH.

Lockheed Martin, Tata JV to produce F-16 fighter jet wings in India
  • Lockheed Martin has entered into an agreement with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) for the production of the wings. The wings of Lockheed Martin’s F-16 fighter jets will be produced in India, the American security and aerospace giant announced on 4th September , in a major boost to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
  • Producing F-16 wings in India will strengthen Lockheed Martin’s strategic partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and support the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government.
  • The F-16 Block 70 features advanced avionics, a proven Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a modernised cockpit, advanced weapons, conformal fuel tanks, an automatic ground collision avoidance system, an advanced engine and an industry-leading extended structural service life of 12,000 hours.
  • Lockheed Martin and TASL joint venture is bidding for a contract to supply Indian air force (IAF) with 114 combat planes, estimated at more than $15 billion which must be all manufactured locally under the Make in India programme.
  • Lockheed has offered to move its entire F-16 manufacturing base to India. It will help to push local manufacturing that will generate jobs and also end armed forces’ dependence on imports.
  • Lockhead Martin and TASL have already entered into a partnership for C-130J Super Hercules airlifter and S-92 helicopter.

Aadhaar mandatory for organ transplants in Tamil Nadu Organ sharing network
  • Aadhaar is now mandatory for Indian patients to register in the Tamil Nadu Network for Organ Sharing. As part of measures to streamline the deceased donor transplant programme, the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) has recently made Aadhaar cards compulsory for Indians to register in the organ waitlist registry, while foreigners have to submit a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the respective Embassies.
  • Earlier, any identity card, including voter’s ID, was acceptable for Indian patients. If a patient was in need of two organs such as liver and kidney, two separate IDs were issued earlier. Now, the authority has brought in a single unique ID for a patient, irrespective of the number of organs he or she registers for.

Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu – a registered society, was formed by G.O.396 dated 12.12.2014 under the Chairmanship of the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The General Body consists of 21 members including the Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Hon’ble Minister of Finance. TRANSTAN’s entire functions are overseen by an Executive Committee which includes the Principal Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Health & Family Welfare Dept.

TRANSTAN also functions as Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) by GOI order and was registered as a society on 18th March 2015. Cadaver Transplant Program is one of the programs run by TRANSTAN and will also coordinate and supervise entire range of transplant activities including live transplants, cadaver transplants and tissue transplants.


International Women Entrepreneurs Summit held in Kathmandu, Nepal
  • The International Women Entrepreneurs Summit 2018 is being held in Kathmandu, Nepal. Vice President of Nepal Nanda Bahadur Pun inaugurated the summit “Equality begins with Economic Empowerment”.
  • The main objective of the summit is to bring together achievers, women business leaders, professionals, international service providers, resource organizations, experts, government representatives and other stakeholders with a focus on innovative economic transformation through discussions and collaborations.
  • The delegates from the SAARC, ASEAN, EU, Africa, Arab countries and China participating in the summit.
  • The event is organised by the South Asian Women Development Forum.

  • The South Asian Women Development Forum is an autonomous, nonprofit organization based in Kathmandu, Nepal that has been granted the status of SAARC Recognized Body by 36th Session of SAARC Council Ministers at 18th SAARC Summit held in Kathmandu in 2014.
  • This happens to be the primary SAARC Recognized Body organisation that works on women entrepreneurs matters and represents national women entrepreneurs’ associations or organizations, institutions working towards economic issues of women entrepreneurs in the SAARC Region.

Japanese swimmer Ikee Rikako named “Most Valuable Player” of Asian Games 2018
  • Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has chosen Japanese woman swimmer Rikako Ikee as the winner of Most Valuable Player (MVP) Trophy Award in 2018 Jakarta and Palembang Asian Games. With this, she became the first female winner of MVP award, which OCA introduced at 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.  She was presented with a trophy and $50,000 cheque.
  • Rikako Ikee was recognized for the award for winning 6 gold and 2 silver medals. She had won gold medals in 50m butterfly, 100m fly, 50m free, 100m free, 4x100m free and the 4x100m medley events and silver medals in 4 x 200m freestyle and mixed medley relays.
  • She is first female athlete in any sport to win six gold medals at a single Asian Games.
  • So far, only North Korean shooter So Gin-man, had won seven golds and a silver at 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi, India.
  • With eight medals in total, Ikee has equalled record medal haul in single Asian Games held by North Korean shooter So Gin-man.
  • Ikee is the fourth Japanese athlete to win this award since its inception.

Cabinet doubles Jan Dhan Yojana overdraft limit
  • In an attempt to encourage more people to open bank accounts, the government decided to make the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) an open-ended scheme and has added more incentives to the scheme.
  • The Jan Dhan Yojana scheme was launched in August 2014 for a period of four years as a national mission for financial inclusion to ensure access of financial services like bank accounts, insurance, and pensions to the masses.
  • Overdraft facility on these accounts doubled from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, of which Rs 2,000 will be given without preconditions.
  • Accidental insurance cover that is available on RuPay debit cards linked to new insurance accounts will be doubled to Rs 2 lakh.
  • Age limit for availing the overdraft facility is extended to 65 years from 60.
  • 41 crore accounts have been opened under the scheme so far and as much Rs 81,200 crore has been deposited in them.
  • 53 percent of the PMJDY account holders are women, while 83 percent of the accounts are seeded with Aadhaar.

  • It is a government scheme that aims to expand and make affordable access to financial services such as bank accounts, remittances, credit, insurance and pensions.
  • This financial inclusion campaign was launched by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 15 August 2014.

Saurabh Chaudhary create world record to claim gold in ISSF World Championships
  • Asian Games gold-medallist Saurabh Chaudhary shattered the world record to claim the junior 10m air pistol gold at the ISSF World Championships. The 16-year-old Chaudhary, who won the Asiad gold last month, qualified third with a score of 581 before shooting down his own world record with a score of 245.5 in the final.
  • Arjun Singh Cheema settled for a bronze in the same event and the Indian team took the silver, propelled by Chaudhary’s phenomenal individual performance. Singh managed 218 once the field was pruned to eight following the qualifying round.
  • The Indian team of Chaudhary, Singh and Anmol, who could not make the individual final, claimed the silver with a combined score of 1730.

FACTFILE – ISSF World Shooting Championships

  • The ISSF World Shooting Championships are governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation.
  • World Shooting Championships began in 1897, after the successful 1896 Summer Olympics, and although the ISSF was not founded until 1907, these early competitions are still seen by the organization as the beginning of a continuous row of championships.
  • These championships, including all ISSF shooting events, are held every four years since 1954. For the shotgun events only, there is an additional World Championship competition in odd-numbered years.

Amazon becomes 2nd US Company to hit $1 Trillion in Market Cap
  • The recent US stock market rally has made two US company stocks to hit $1 trillion mark in market capitalization. Jeff Bezos’ online marketplace Amazon has hit the milestone after its stock breached levels of $2,050.27 in intra-trade.
  • Smart-phone major Apple became the first company to hit $1 Trillion on August 2nd after having presence of almost 38 years.
  • With the new landmark, the company’s market hit reached a figure of $ 1 lakh crore on the basis of total outstanding shares of 487,741,189. The rally in Amazon’s stock price by a rough 1% triggered the company to reach this new milestone.
  • The two other tech giants to soon cross this landmark are Microsoft and Google.
