Cabinet approves new umbrella scheme Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan
  • The Scheme is aimed at ensuring remunerative prices to the farmers for their produce as announced in the Union Budget for 2018. The step is a major boost to the pro-farmers initiative of the Government. 
  • The new Umbrella Scheme includes the mechanism of ensuring remunerative prices to the farmers and is comprised of Price Support Scheme, Price Deficiency Payment Scheme and Pilot of Private Procurement and Stockist Scheme.
  • This is a step aims at protecting the farmers’ income which is expected to go a long way towards the welfare of farmers. 
  • The Cabinet also decided that participation of private sector in procurement operation needs to be piloted so that on the basis of learnings the ambit of private participation in procurement operations may be increased.
  • The government has already increased the MSP of kharif crops by following the principle of 1.5 times the cost of production. 
  • It is expected that the increase in MSP will be translated to farmer’s income by way of robust procurement mechanism in coordination with the State Governments. 

India ranks 3rd globally in family-owned businesses
  • India ranks third globally in terms of the number of family-owned businesses with 111 companies of USD 839 billion total market capitalisation, followed closely after China with 159 firms and the United States with 121 firms.
  • Korea came in fourth place, with 43 companies (USD 434.1 billion market capitalisation), followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand, each with 26 companies.
  • The report covered 11 markets in the Non-Japan Asian region, which continue to dominate and represent a 53 per cent share of the universe, with a total market capitalisation of over USD 4 trillion.
  • Indian family-owned companies generated a 13.9 per cent annual average share price return since 2006, compared to 6 per cent recorded by their non-family-owned peers
  • Out of the top 50 most profitable companies globally, 24 were from Asia, with a total market capitalisation of USD 748 billion.
  • The list included 12 Indian family-owned companies with a total market capitalisation of USD 192.2 billion.
  • Moreover, in Non-Japan Asia, more than 50 per cent of the top 30 best-performing companies are from India, followed by one-third from China. Malaysia occupies third place with three companies, while Korea and Indonesia each have one

Ranjan Gogoi appointed 46th Chief Justice of India
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the 46th Chief Justice of India.
  • Justice Gogoi will assume office on October 3, 2018 after the retirement of the current Chief Justice of India, Justice DipakMisra. Justice Gogoi will be the Chief Justice till November 17, 2019.

BIOGRAPHY – Justice Ranjan Gogoi

  • Justice Gogoi was a judge of the Supreme Court of India since April, 2012.
  • His father Keshab Chandra Gogoi was a Chief minister under the Indian National Congress regime in the state of Assam in the year 1982.
  • 2018 Supreme Court of India crisis – On 12 January 2018, Justices Ranjan Gogoi along with Justices J Chelameswar, M B Lokur, and Kurian Joseph of the Supreme Court of India, for the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, held a press conference, alleging problems plaguing the Supreme Court, failure in the justice delivery system and allocation of cases.

FACTFILE – Chief Justice of India (CJI)

  • The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India. The CJI also heads their administrative functions.
  • As head of the supreme court, the chief justice is responsible for the allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches which deal with important matters of law.
  • In accordance with Article 145 of the Constitution of India and the Supreme Court Rules of Procedure of 1966, the Chief Justice allocates all work to the other judges who are bound to refer the matter back to him or her (for re-allocation) in any case where they require it to be looked into by a larger bench of more judges.
  • The Chief Justice also carries out the administrative functions of maintenance of the roster; appointment of court officials and general and miscellaneous matters relating to the supervision and functioning of the Supreme Court.
  • It has been an unbroken convention for decades now, to appoint the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as the CJI.

FACTFILE – Federal Court of India (1937-1950)

  • The Federal Court came into being on 1 September 1937.
  • It began with a Chief Justice and two puisne judges.
  • The first Chief Justice was Sir Maurice Gwyer and the other two judges were Sir Shah Muhammad Sulaiman and M. R. Jayakar.

CM Sonowal inaugurates new trade centre at Darranga
  • In a bid to boost bilateral trade between Assam and Bhutan, Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal inaugurated Indo-Bhutan Border Trade Centre at Darranga in Baksa.
  • The trade centre would help the people of Baksa, Udalguri, Chirang and Kokrajhar to open new business with Bhutan.
  • The volume of trade between Assam and Bhutan, which has been going on since long, especially through the nine gates is expected to increase.
  • Recently Bhutan and Bangladesh for opening their Consulates at Guwahati which has given renewed thrust to the relations with the neighbouring countries with Assam.

NITI Aayog, Intel, and TIFR to set up model International Center for Transformative Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI)
  • As a part of NITI Aayog’s ‘National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence’ Discussion Paper that focuses on establishing ICTAI in the country through private sector collaboration, NITI Aayog, Intel and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) collaborate to set up International Center for Transformative Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • The Model ICTAI will aid in development of AI-led application-based research projects in three important areas- healthcare, agriculture and smart mobility.
  • It will establish best practices in domains of ICTAI governance, fundamental research, physical infrastructure, compute and service infrastructure needs, and talent acquisition.
  • The developments by this model ICTAI will be used by NITI Aayog to set up future ICTAIs across country.
