Assam govt approved Infrastructure projects worth Rs 5,700 crore
  • The State government has approved 5,681 projects of the Public Works Department having financial involvement of Rs 5,700 crore since May this year.
  • The projects include building and up-gradation of around 7,000 km of roads and conversion of 387 wooden bridges into concrete ones. Physical works on the projects are expected to begin by the year end.
  • Among the approved projects are 50 ‘signature projects’ under the Uttoran Scheme through which Rs 10 crore is being given to each legislative assembly constituency for taking up a road project.
  • A total of 636 road projects have been sanctioned for development of internal labour line roads in tea gardens.
  • All these above mentioned projects are besides the works sanctioned under the PMGSY for development of 9,843 km of roads in 26 districts at an estimated cost of Rs 8,192 crore, of which 10% cost will be borne by the State government.
  • A three-lane railway overbridge at Na Ali of Jorhat has been sanctioned under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme with an estimated cost of Rs 68 crore.

FACTFILE – Assam Mala Programme

  • Assam government proposes to take up the Assam Mala Programme, a fifteen year long scheme for construction and upgradation of State highways, during this financial year.
  • intend to cover 2500 km of roads under the programme.
  • The State highways will be built in the standard of the National Highway in terms of quality.
  • The programme will have a financial involvement of Rs 5000 crore.

 India completes Nuclear-triad by inducting indigenously built INS Arihant into service
  • With nuclear-capable submarine INS Arihant successfully returning from deterrence patrol, India completed its nuclear triad achieving strike capabilities in air, land and sea.
  • Congratulating the crew of Strategic Strike Nuclear Submarine (SSBN) INS Arihant, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Today is historic because it marks the completing of the successful establishment of the nuclear triad. India’s nuclear triad will be an important pillar of global peace and stability.”
  • The 6,000-tonne Arihant was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project at the Ship Building Centre at Visakhapatnam.
  • Launched on July 26, 2009 by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the submarine was commissioned in August 2016 after a series of extensive sea trials.

FACTFILE – Nuclear triad capability of India

  • India is sixth Nation in the world to possess Nuclear Triad, which include capability of delivering nuclear weapons by aircraft, land based ballistic missiles and submarine launched missiles.
  • India Army has strong arsenal of land based ballistic missiles including Agni series, Prithvi series, Prahar Missile, Shaurya Missile, supersonic Brahmos and subsonic Nirbhay missiles. Indian Airforce operates Jaguars aircrafts, SU 30 MKI and Rafale aircrafts which can deliver nuclear weapons.
  • And now, Indian Navy has also got it’s own nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine INS Arihant capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

FACTFILE – INS Arihant

  • INS Arihant is the lead ship of expected five of the India’s Arihant class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.
  • The 6,000 tonne vessel was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project at the Ship Building Centre in the port city of Visakhapatnam.
  • Arihant was launched on 26 July 2009, the anniversary of Vijay Diwas (Kargil War Victory Day) by then Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh.

NDMC launches QR-enabled fridge magnets for digital payment of bills
  • The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) launched a “smart” initiative wherein it will distribute quick response-enabled smiley fridge magnets to its consumers to facilitate digital payment of utility bills.
  • Powered by SignCatch – an IT and services company, the magnets will be personalised and each customer will have a unique QR Code mapped to their consumer account number.
  • There will be separate magnets provided by the NDMC to its consumers’ doorstep for both electricity and water bills.
  • The QR Code will redirect the consumers to their current bill with an option to pay using any of the digital payment channels active with NDMC like credit/debit cards, net banking, wallet, and UPI
  • These magnets would be extremely useful in cases where a consumer misplaces the pending paper bills.
  • The NDMC aims to give the magnets to 25,000 of its electricity and water consumers across Lutyens’ Delhi, with plans to subsequently expand the coverage.

FACTFILE – New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC)

  • NMDC is the municipal council of the city of New Delhi.
  • It is governed by a council headed by a chairperson, appointed by Government of India. The council also includes the Chief Minister of Delhi as an Ex officio member.
  • The Union Territory of Delhi is divided into three statutory urban regions: the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the Delhi Cantonment Board.
  • NDMC has its origins in the Imperial Delhi Committee which was constituted on 25 March 1913 to overlook the construction of the new capital of India.
  • In May 1994, the NDMC Act 1994, replaced the Punjab Municipal Act 1911, and the Committee was renamed as the New Delhi Municipal Council.

Arunachal signs MoU to organize International Tribal Film Festival
  • The Arunachal Pradesh government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) to organize an ‘International Tribal Film Festival’.
  • The signing of the MoU between ESG and the state department of Information & Public Relations, is a new direction towards exposing the potential of the state that would foster further economic activities and creation of employment opportunities.
  • The state government also signed a Petroleum Mining Lease Deed Agreement with Oil India Limited (OIL) for Ningru block in Namsai and Changlang districts.
  • The Central Government had granted Petroleum Mining Lease for Ningru to OIL for a period of 20 years from November 1983. The company had drilled 14 oil wells within Kumchai area of Ningru lease but only one well is producing crude oil.

Meghalaya Govt launched Mission Mushroom
  • Meghalaya Government launched another mission mode programme to increase the production of Mushroom from 30 metric tonnes to 5,000 metric tonnes in five years.
  • The State has an ideal weather for the cultivation of mushroom, but due to lack of support and technology production has remained almost constant.
  • Currently the State has produces 30 metric tonnes of mushroom annually and through the Mission mode programme the State would push the production up to 5,000 metric tonnes in the next five years.
  • The State Govt has earmarked Rs 50 crore for the mission for the next five years and beside funding, the State Government would provide technological know-how and compost assistance to Mushroom farmers.
  • 130 villages are targeted for the programme and different varieties of Mushroom have been identified for cultivation for villages in different districts.
  • Three varieties of Mushroom viz. White Button, Oyster and Shiitake are to be cultivated.

Point2Remember – This is the third Mission mode programme the Meghalaya agriculture department has launched after Mission Jackfruit and Mission Lakadong.


 Odisha launches Saura Jalnidhi scheme to popularize solar energy
  • Odisha Govt has launched Saura Jalnidhi scheme to encourage use of solar energy in irrigation by farmers.
  • The scheme which will provide irrigation benefits in 2,500 acres of the state, farmers will be given 90% subsidy and 5,000 solar pumps.
  • Farmers who have valid farmer identity cards and have minimum 0.5 acres of agricultural land, can avail the benefits.
  • The scheme was launched as part of state government’s endeavor to increase the use of solar photovoltaic pump sets so that irrigation facilities can be provided in areas with bad power supply.
  • It will help reduce burden of input cost on farmers, increase agricultural income and also will popularize solar energy.

Northern Railway gets its first high speed locomotive
  • The Northern Railway received its first aerodynamically designed passenger electric locomotive capable of running at 200 kmph.
  • The first aerodynamically designed three-phase WAP-5 passenger electric locomotive built by the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works has been introduced in service in Northern Railway.
  • The new locomotive comes with improved aerodynamics and has an ergonomic design, which also takes care of the driver’s comfort and safety.
  • The new locomotive will be used to power premium trains like Rajdhani Express, Gatiman Express, and Shatabdi Express, which would slash the travel time for these trains.
  • The WAP-5 variant, with 5,400 HP of power, is energy efficient and stable for high speed operations. It has also been provided with Crew Voice and Video Recording System (CVVRS) for on-board driving data recording and analysis.

FACTFILE – Chittaranjan Locomotive Works

  • Founded in 1950, the Indian Railways-owned industrial unit is named after the Indian freedom-fighter Chittaranjan Das.
  • It is located at Chittaranjan in Asansol with an ancillary unit in Dankuni.
  • It is one of the largest locomotive manufacturers in the world.
