India accounts more than half leprosy cases globally, says WHO
  • The number of leprosy cases have steadily declined worldwide, an estimated two lakh cases continue to be reported every year, with India accounting for more than half.
  • Leprosy-related discrimination, stigma and prejudice are the most powerful barriers to ending leprosy, especially given the disease is 100 per cent curable when detected early.
  • Other than India, a significant number of leprosy cases are detected in the Southeast Asia region, Brazil, sub-Saharan Africa and the Pacific.
  • WHO’s Global Leprosy Strategy 2016-2020 points that policies that promote inclusion and aim at ending leprosy-related discrimination, stigma and prejudice should be at the front and at the centre of all leprosy programmes, as powerful tools to achieve a leprosy-free world.

FACTFILE – Leprosy

  • Also known as Hansen’s disease (HD), is a long-term infection by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae or Mycobacterium lepromatosis.
  • Initially, infections are without symptoms and typically remain this way for 5 to 20 years. Symptoms that develop include granulomas of the nerves, respiratory tract, skin, and eyes. This may result in a lack of ability to feel pain, which can lead to the loss of parts of extremities due to repeated injuries or infection due to unnoticed wounds.

LRSAM Missile successfully test fired from ship
  • The ship-launched Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) was successfully test-fired, when the missile was fired from INS Chennai against an incoming aerial target flying at low altitude.
  • The missile destroyed the target with a direct hit and all the mission objectives have been met.

FACTFILE – LRSAM or Barak 8

  • It is an Indian-Israeli surface-to-air missile (SAM), designed to defend against any type of airborne threat including aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs as well as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and combat jets.
  • Barak 8 was jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), Israel’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, Elta Systems, Rafael and other companies.
  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) produce the missiles.

Kerala to launch NRI pension scheme
  • For the welfare of millions of Pravasi Malayalis, a one-time payment of Rs 5 lakh will be deposited with KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) for financing infrastructure projects.
  • There are 2.1 million migrants from Kerala across the world whose estimated total annual remittances to the state has been found to be Rs 85,092 crore.
  • The state would set up a call centre with an international Toll Free Line to provide information, register complaints and details about action taken on various issues faced by the Non-Resident Indians.
