MoU signed between Assam’s Department of Transport and State Bank of India
  • A MoU was signed between the Department of Transport, Govt of Assam and State Bank of India for integration of SBI e-pay with ‘SARATHI’ portal for online application and collection of fee for driving licence.
  • The MoU was signed by Manojit Saikia, Deputy General Manager-(Digital & Transaction Banking) on behalf of the State Bank of India and Manoj Kumar, Commissioner of Transport on behalf of the Govt of Assam in the presence of Circle CGM Sunil Kumar Tandon, Digmanu Gupta, General Manager-(Network-II) and Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager-(Network-I).
  • The public will be able to apply and pay online the required fee for their driving licence including learner licence themselves.

 New research Centre on birds inaugurated in Assam
  • Padmashree Jadav Payeng, who is also known as Forest Man of India, inaugurated a centre named as Assam Centre for Ornithological Research at Rongdoi Dolouguri near Nimatighat on the outskirts.
  • The opening of the centre near the Brahmaputra bank – a hotspot of local and migratory avian species in the wetlands – is a joint initiative of two ornithophiles – Suryya Kumar Chetia, Assistant Professor, Assam Women’s University and Dipjyoti Saikia, a  journalist.
  • The centre is aimed at carrying out systematic studies on birds and  to undertake steps for conservation of the winged creatures.
  • The centre proposes to bring out an annual online magazine in this regard.

  • Jadav Payeng is an environmental activist and forestry worker from Jorhat, India.
  • Over the course of several decades, he planted and tended trees on a sandbar of the river Brahmaputra turning it into a forest reserve.
  • The forest, called Molai forest after him, is located near Kokilamukh of Jorhat, Assam, India and encompasses an area of about 1,360 acres.
  • In 2015, he was awarded with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.

PM inaugurates eight projects in Manipur
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated eight projects in Manipur, including laying the foundation stones of four other projects which will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,500 crore.
  • PM Modi praised Manipuri women for being in the forefront in all spheres.
  • He said the Integrated Check Post at Moreh, the border town of Manipur, will benefit the people of both India and Myanmar in trade and tourism.

Lok Sabha passes Bills related to Aadhaar, Companies Bill and The New Delhi International Arbitration Centre
  • The Lok Sabha passed three Bills, The Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018, The Companies (Amendments) Bill, 2018 and The New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill, 2018.
  • The Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018 will provide legal backing to voluntary seeding of biometric Aadhaar ID with mobile numbers and bank accounts after the Supreme Court barred mandatory use of the 12-digit unique identifier by private firms.
  • The bill will amend the existing Aadhaar Act, 2016, the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
  • The Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2018 will replaces an ordinance promulgated on November 2, 2018 and it will amends several provisions in the Companies Act, 2013 relating to penalties.
  • The New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill, 2018 will establish an autonomous and independent institution for better management of arbitration in India.
  • The New Delhi International Arbitration Centre will conduct arbitration, mediation, and conciliation proceedings.

Assam Govt to set up more Farmers’ Producer Companies to boost horticulture output
  • To boost the horticulture sector in Assam and increase the average yield of horticultural crops, the State government is focusing on proper implementation of national schemes as well as on initiatives like setting up of more Farmers’ Producer Companies (FPCs) and promoting organic cultivation.
  • Steps have been taken to expand the scope of Central schemes like the Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States (HMNEH), the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) and the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY).
  • Farmers are encouraged to come under FPCs to enable them to easily market their produce as well as secure easy financing.
  • The Central government scheme, the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCD-NER), is currently being implemented in nine districts of Assam.
  • Emphasis has been put on micro irrigation system comprising drip and micro sprinklers, to increase net irrigation areas.

Special hygiene room for girls opened in Cachar’s school
  • Considering concern over lack of awareness among a sizeable section of girls on menstrual hygiene issues, a menstrual hygiene room was recently constructed at the Government Girls’ HS School.
  • This is a first-of-its-kind move in the State, State Minister for Forests and Fisheries and Excise Parimal Suklabaidya inaugurated the room and said that this step will surely help the girls attend classes regularly.
  • Cachar Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan also hailed the effort and said that steps would be taken to make the facilities available in other schools as well.
