Arunachal Pradesh recognition Assamese as 3rd language
  • All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) central committee adviser Ashwini Kr Chetia and its Kamrup (M) unit president Basanta Gogoi have hailed the recognition of Assamese as the third language in the educational institutions of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • This noble step would strengthen the amity and brotherhood among the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
  • The Arunachal Pradesh government had issued a notification in this regard and also installed a life-size statue of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, named ‘Statue of Brotherhood’, at Bolung village in Lower Dibang Valley district of the State.

Kaziranga University signed MoU with Apollo Medskills on health education
  • Kaziranga University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Apollo Medskills Ltd (AMSL) to develop and promote health education and training programmes for the students of the in the North-East region.
  • This MoU was signed by Dr Srinivas Rao, CEO, Apollo Medskills Ltd and Dr PK Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, Kaziranga University.
  • Along with the development and delivery of joint academic programmes, the collaboration also explores the expansion of infrastructure for skill development, in which both parties aim to work towards the setting up of centralised hub of domain laboratories, as well as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for achieving educational and training objectives.

FACTFILE – Apollo Medskills

  • It is a medical skills development institute in India. It was set up in the year 2012 as joint venture between Apollo Hospitals and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) as part of setting up more than 40 training institutes across the country to train and upgrade the skills of hospital workforce across the country

UN climate conference adopts Paris rulebook
  • Nearly 200 nations agreed to enforce rules on implementing the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
  • Marked by day-long negotiations, the second extended day of the UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP24, in the Polish city of Katowice, saw the rulebook being adopted unanimously.
  • The Paris deal will come into force in 2020. The guidelines known as Paris rulebook will promote trust among nations that all countries are playing their part in addressing the challenge of climate change.
  • India also expressed its reservation over the lack of equity in the rules relating to global stock-take in the rulebook that implements the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement.

FACTFILE – COP24 or Katowice Climate Change Conference

  • The 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference was the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), also known as the Katowice Climate Change Conference
  • It was held between 2 and 15 December 2018 in Katowice, Poland.
  • The conference agreed on rules to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement.

India, Maldives to deepen cooperation for Indian Ocean security
  • India and the Maldives agreed to deepen cooperation to maintain peace and security in the Indian Ocean region following delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
  • Both India and the Maldives share equal interest and stake in the development and stability of the region.
  • The Prime Minister also called for boosting commercial relations and bilateral trade.
  • Solih said that during the discussions, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to democracy.
  • The Maldives President also said that both sides discussed cooperation in health, education and commerce among other areas.
  • Relations between India and the Maldives deteriorated after Solih’s predecessor Abdulla Yameen imposed an internal emergency in February this year.

PV Sindhu becomes the first Indian to win gold at BWF World Tour Finals
  • V. Sindhu celebrated gold after defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara to win badminton’s season-ending World Tour Finals.
  • Sindhu, who is ranked sixth worldwide, won the final with scoreline of 21-19, 21-17.
  • It is her’s first title victory in 2018.

Nagaland Governor chairs annual executive meeting of NEZCC
  • Nagaland Governor and Chairman of the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) PB Acharya addressed the annual executive and governing body meeting of NEZCC at Shilpgram.
  • At present there are seven zonal cultural centres across the country to promote, pursue and preserve India’s cultural heritage. Around 12,000 performance teams from different states of NE are registered with NEZCC.
  • The ultimate goal of all the zonal cultural centres of India is to strengthen the country’s heritage as well as national and emotional integration.

Union Cabinet approved two All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu and Telangana
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of two more All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), one in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai and the other in Telangana’s Bibinagar with the cost of Rs 1,264 crore and Rs 1,028 crore respectively.
  • The two new institutes will be set up under the Pradhan MantriSwasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
  • The timeframe for the establishment of the new AIIMS will be 45 months, broadly comprising a pre-construction phase of 10 months, a construction phase of 32 months and stabilization or commissioning phase of 3 months. 

Philippines‘s Catriona Elisa Gray crowned Miss Universe 2018
  • Catriona Elisa Gray from Philippines pipped 93 contestants from around the world to emerge the winner of of the Miss Universe 2018 pageant, while India’s Nehal Chudasama failed to make it to the Top 20.
  • She was crowned by Miss Universe 2017 Demi Leigh Nel-Peters, who comes from South Africa. Gray is an HIV/AIDS advocate and volunteers as a Teacher’s Assistant to the students at an NGO according to the official Miss Universe website.

IAF flies first military plane with bio-jet fuel
  • In a first, experimental test pilots and test engineer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) flew an An-32 military transport aircraft using blended bio-jet fuel. The sortie was flown at Chandigarh on 17th December morning.
  • The project is a combined effort of IAF, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Directorate General Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) and CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum.
  • The IAF carried out extensive engine tests on the ground. This is now followed by flight trials using 10 per cent bio-jet blended ATF.
  • This fuel is made from Jatropha oil sourced from Chattisgarh Biodiesel Development Authority (CBDA) and then processed at CSIR-IIP, Dehradun
  • IAF intends to fly the An-32 transport aircraft using bio-jet fuel on 26 January 26, 2019 at the Republic Day flypast.

HAL test flies third light copter prototype LUH
  • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has test flown the third prototype of Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), the third prototype (PT3) of LUH made its maiden flight on December 14. The chopper was flown by test pilots Wing Commander (retired) Anil Bhambhani and Group Captain (retired) M.R. Anand.
  • The third prototype’s flight was flawless and would augment the flight testing towards certification.
  • With this flight, LUH is now close to production clearance and HAL is confident of meeting the requirements of the armed forces .
  • The LUH is a three-tonne class single-engine light helicopter under development by the HAL, so as to replace the aging Cheetah and Chetak choppers used by the Indian defence forces.
  • The helicopter is being indigenously developed by HAL to meet the requirements for both military and civil operations.
