Digital literacy programme for women launched in Manipur
  • Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla speaking during the launch of the digital literacy and online safety programme for young girls and women, in Imphal.
  • Amid the presence of Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla, State Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen and Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma, the digital literacy and online safety programme was launched for the first time in North East India in Manipur to digitally empower young girls and women.
  • The Manipur State women’s commission is planning to digitally empower around 10,000 girls and women across the State.
  • The next States to be covered under the nationwide campaign will include Sikkim and Meghalaya in the North East. Earlier, the programme on the safe and responsible use of the Internet, social media and e-mail was launched in six States of the country.

Union Cabinet clears National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS)
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the launch of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) to address ever-increasing technological requirements of the society.
  • The mission to be implemented by the Science and Technology Department, at a total outlay of Rs 3,660 crore for a period of five years, would take into account the international trends and road maps of leading countries for the next generation technologies, an official statement said.
  • It said the implementation of the mission would bring cyber-physical systems and associated technologies within reach of the country and would adopt them to address India-specific national and regional issues.
  • It would also produce next generation skilled manpower in cyber-physical systems, give impetus to advance research, catalyse translational research, and accelerate entrepreneurship and startup ecosystem development, it added.

Cabinet nods India’s first agri export policy to double farmers’ income
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the country’s first Agriculture Export Policy with an aim to double farmers’ income and agricultural export to $60 billion by 2022, Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu said.
  • This is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling farmers income by 2022. In less than one year, we have raised our agricultural export to $37 billion from $30 billion and we are sure to double it to $60 billion by 2022.
  • Currently, only three products, viz, rice, marine products and meat, constitute about 52 per cent of India’s agricultural exports, thus, there is need to diversify by promoting organic, ethnic and indigenous products in a substantive manner.
  • The government has come out with a comprehensive Agriculture Export Policy aimed at doubling the agricultural exports and integrating Indian farmers and agricultural products with the global value chains.
  • The Cabinet also approved the proposal for establishment of monitoring framework at Centre with Commerce as the nodal department with representation from various line ministries and departments, agencies and representatives of concerned state governments to oversee the implementation of Agriculture Export Policy.
  • Objectives of the policy include reaching $100 billion export target in the next few years with a stable trade policy regime, diversify export basket and destinations, and boost high value and value added agricultural exports with focus on perishables.
  • It also aims to promote novel, indigenous, organic, ethnic, traditional and non-traditional agri product exports, provide an institutional mechanism for pursuing market access, tackling barriers and to deal with sanitary and phyto-sanitary issues.

Indian, Chinese militaries to conduct joint exercise ‘Hand-in-Hand’
  • The Indian and Chinese militaries will be engaged in a joint military exercise that will involve tactical level operations in an international counter insurgency environment. The annual Exercise Hand-in-Hand will commence on December 11 and go on till December 23 at Chengdu in China.
  • The exercise is conducted annually as part of military diplomacy and interaction between the armies of India and China.
  • The aim of the exercise is to build and promote close relations between armies of both the countries and to enhance the ability of joint exercise commander to take military contingents of both nations under command.
  • The exercise will involve tactical level operations in an international counter insurgency and counter terrorist environment under UN mandate.
  • Troops from the Indian side have been selected from 11 SIKHLI of Indian Army while troops from a unit of Tibetan military district will be taking part.

Kia Motors signs MoU with Andhra for future eco mobility
  • South Korean auto major Kia Motors signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state of Andhra Pradesh to collaborate on the partnership for future eco mobility.
  • The partnership reinforces Kia’s commitment to support the Andhra Pradesh government in growing the uptake of electric vehicles (EV) and the development of a local EV infrastructure.
  • The memorandum was signed in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Managing Director and CEO of Kia Motors India Kookhyun Shim.
  • As part of the agreement, Kia Motors has provided the government with three examples of its global bestselling eco car – Niro Hybrid, Niro Plug-in Hybrid and Niro EV.
  • Kia is also installing a vehicle charging station at Vijayawada, for representatives from the regional government to charge their new environmentally-friendly fleet.
  • The partnership signifies Kia’s long-term commitment to build eco-friendly vehicles at its new Anantapur plant in Andhra Pradesh, an important step for the future of clean mobility in the rapidly expanding Indian market.
  • As the state government is developing 14 smart cities, Kia Motors is working with it to design a new generation of transportation systems that best serve the citizens in each of these cities.
  • Construction of Kia Motors’ first manufacturing facility in India is underway in Anantapur district. It is expected to begin production in the second-half of 2019 and produce approximately 300,000 units per year.

  • Headquartered in Seoul, is South Korea’s second-largest automobile manufacturer, followed by Hyundai Motor Company.
  • The company is planning to enter the Indian market in 2019[39] with their ‘Made for India’ SUV- SP2 Concept.
  • The company is currently building a production facility on a Greenfield land in Anantpur district, Andhra Pradesh, which is the first manufacturing facility in India, to help strengthen the company’s position in the fifth largest global automotive market. Kia has committed investments to the tune of $1.1 billion to develop operations in India.

OnePlus to release first 5G smartphone in 2019
  • Chinese handset maker OnePlus has said that its first 5G smartphone could be released in the first half of 2019.
  • OnePlus is expecting to launch the 5G phone by the end of May this year. Since its establishment five years ago, OnePlus has only made flagship smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Series mobile platforms.
