India successfully test-fires Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) propulsion based missile

India successfully carried out a flight test of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet(SFDR) propulsion based missile. The test flight for this breakthrough in Indian missile technology, was conducted as a technology demonstration from the Launch Center-III of Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha.

“The flight test met all the mission objectives. The technology of nozzle less booster has been successfully demonstrated in the mission for the first time in the country,” an official statement said.

FACTFILE – Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) propulsion based missile

  • In a solid-fuel ramjet, air from the inlet flows through the “pipe” of fuel, which burns along its length.
  • Unlike solid rocket propellant whose formulation is approximately 20% fuel and 80% oxidizer, the solid ramjet fuel is 100% fuel and obtains oxidizer from air, with the result being approximately four times the specific impulse as compared to solid rocket propellant.
  • The higher specific impulse translates to either longer range for a given payload weight and volume, greater payload to a given range, a smaller size to a given range, or a combination of all three compared to a solid rocket motor.
  • The design scheme is very similar to that of Meteor BVRAAM with two air ducts, although DRDO’s 250kg SFDR is around 75kg heavier than 185kg Meteor.
  • Unlike traditional rocket motor, SFDR can throttle its engine during different phases of flight especially while approaching its target it can throttle up and able to maneuver and attack even rapidly maneuvering targets.
  • This 250-kilogram SFDR missile has been under development since 2013.
  • This new technology will help both surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles perform better and enhance their strike range making the weapons more lethal.
  • Now India can have fastest long-range missiles in the two categories providing a full-fledged and multi-layered aerial protection from hostile attacks.

India to develop Asia’s first 13 ‘Blue Flag’ beaches

13 Indian beaches will be conferred with the Blue Flag certification, which is awarded to beaches that are environment-friendly, clean, and well-equipped with international-standard amenities for tourists.

The beaches of Odisha, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Goa, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be the first, in India and in Asia, to get the Blue Flag certification.

The Indian beaches are being developed by the Society for Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM), an environment ministry’s body working for the management of coastal areas, according to the Blue Flag certification standards.

To get the certification, it need to improve the aquatic habitat by cleaning the growing pollution and garbage in the Indian beaches and to develop ecological tourism with constant progress and development of tourist facilities.

  • Chandrabhaga beach of Odisha’s Konark coast was the first to complete the tag certification process. It will be awarded the honour on the World Environment Day on June 5.
  • Maharashtra’s Chiwla and Bhogave beaches are also being made a part of this initiative.
  • Apart from these, one beach from Puducherry, Goa, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands each has been chosen as Blue Flag beach.

India successfully test-fires nuclear capable Agni-5 ICBM

India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Long Range Ballistic Missile Agni-5, having a strike range of 5,000 km

The surface-to-surface missile was launched using a mobile launcher from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Dr Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast.

New technologies link Navigation systems, very high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro based Inertial Navigation System (RINS) and the most modern and accurate Micro Navigation System (MINS) had ensured the missile reached the target point within few meters of accuracy.

  • Agni-V is an intercontinental ballistic missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • Agni V is part of the Agni series of missiles, one of the missile systems under the original Integrated Guided Missile Development Program.
  • Agni V as a missile with a range of 5,500–5,800 km.
  • Agni-5 is the most advanced with new technologies in terms of navigation and guidance, warhead and engine.
  • It also has advantages of higher reliability, longer shelf life, less maintenance and enhanced mobility, sources said.
  • Five tests of Agni-5 were conducted, starting from April 19, 2012, and all tests were successful.
  • At present, India has in its armoury the Agni series — Agni-1 with 700 km range, Agni-2 with 2,000 km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2,500 km to more than 3,500 km range.
