World Environment Day observed on 5th June

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ (UN) one of the most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

FACTFILE – World Environment Day

  • World Environment Day is observed on 5th June every year.
  • Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is beat plastic pollution.
  • Started in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.
  • WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually.

Maharashtra Govt. announces financial aid for Tur farmers

The Maharashtra government announced to provide financial grant of Rs 1000 per quintal to those farmers whose tur and gram could not be purchased by the administration before the May 31. The state government had set up tur procurement target of 44.6 lakh quintals.

The state Govt has also announced a special subsidy for milk producers. Earlier, the government had decided to give a special subsidy for converting milk into milk powder.


Uttarakhand to ban polythene from July 31

Uttarakhand to put a complete ban on use of polythene throughout the state from July 31, as decided by the Chief Minister on the occasion of World Environment Day, June 5,2018.

As part of a mission called Rispana to Rishiparna, the ancient name of the river, 3.5 lakh trees will be planted along the river in a single day right from its origin at LandhaurShikhar Fall to Motharwala-Daudwala in the city where it merges with Bindal.


MK Jain, MD & CEO of IDBI Bank, is appointed as RBI Deputy Governor

Government appoints  Mahesh Kumar Jain, MD & CEO of IDBI Bank as of the Deputy Governor of RBI for a term of three years.

M K Jain has been MD & CEO of IDBI Bank since March 2017 and was previously CEO of Indian Bank between November 2015 and March 2017. Jain put in place a turnaround strategy for the bank which includes identifying areas of cost reduction and revenue maximisation. The bank sold its stake in NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure, Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) and Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL) to shore up capital.

The fourth deputy governor’s post has been vacant since SS Mundra retired in July 2017.

Government announces Rs 8000 crore bailout package for sugar mills

As a part of the government’s efforts to address the ongoing agrarian crisis, the Union government announced financial relief of more than Rs 8,000 crore aimed for sugarcane farmers and to clear their dues.

The package includes three elements.

  1. A buffer stock of 30 LMT (lakh metric tonnes) of sugar will be created with Rs 1,200 crore, which will be directly transferred to accounts of sugarcane farmers.
  2. Rs 4,400 crore will be used to increase ethanol production to divert sugarcane away from sugar mills which are unable to dispose of their inventories.
  3. The government has also decided to ensure a minimum sale price of Rs 29/kg for sugar.

The creation of buffer stock need not lead to the government buying sugar from the market, and might actually entail the government agreeing to bear a part of carrying cost of unsold inventories of sugar mills.

RBI hike Repo Rate by 25 basis points to 6.25%

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India decided to hike the Repo Rate by 25 basis points to 6.25 per cent. The MPC, headed by RBI Governor Urjit Patel, taken the decision after three days of deliberations.

FACTFILE – Repo (Repurchase) rate

  • Also known as the benchmark interest rate is the rate at which the RBI lends money to the banks for a short-ter, i.e. upto 90 days.
  • It repo rate increases, borrowing from RBI becomes more expensive.
  • If repo rate decrease, borrowing from RBI becomes cheap.
  • RBI changes Repo Rate based on whether it wants to make borrowing by the banks dearer or cheaper.

FACTFILE – RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)

  • On June 27, 2016, the Government amended the RBI Act to hand over the job of monetary policy-making in India to a newly constituted Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).
  • The MPC is to be a six-member panel that is expected to bring “value and transparency” to rate-setting decisions.
  • It will feature three members from the RBI — the Governor, a Deputy Governor and another official — and three independent members to be selected by the Government.
  • The MPC will meet four times a year to decide on monetary policy by a majority vote. And if there’s a tie between the ‘Ayes’ and the ‘Nays’, the RBI governor gets the deciding vote.

49th conference of Governors at Rashtrapati Bhavan

The two-day 49th Conference of Governors concluded at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Ram NathKovind noted about the World Environment Day and said that the approach of ‘Think Global, Act Local’ is considered effective for environment protection.

He also the importance of local and state-level contributions in achieving national goals and asked Governors to take the lead in adopting modern technology and methods. Governors can inspire universities towards USR or the University Social Responsibility and advocated that University students should visit villages at regular intervals.

The Conference of Governors discussed ideas on the commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Presentations were made on the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan and Swachhata Internship. Governors/Lt. Governors gave their suggestions.

The Vice President, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Home Affairs also addressed the concluding session of the Conference.

Governor’s conference is an extra constitutional devise for securing cooperation and coordination between the states in India. In this conference, deliberation over important issues related to states and union territory are taken up.


Madhya Pradesh Govt. announces outstanding power bill waiver scheme

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced an outstanding power bill waiver scheme for labourers and poor families.

The state cabinet headed by Chief Minister of the state, approved the Bijli Bill Mafi Yojana 2018 (Power Bill Waiver Scheme) which is expected to benefit about 77 lakh people of the state.

Labourers falling under the unorganised sector in Madhya Pradesh will get power supply at a subsidised rate.

Along with this scheme, the state cabinet also approved Mukhyamantri Jan Kalyan (Sambal) Yojana 2018 to provide subsidised power).


Virat Kohli listed among World’s highest-paid athletes

According to a Forbes’ compilation of the World’s highest-paid athletes, India cricket captain Virat Kohli is ranked 83rd position in the world.

The list, topped by American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, has Kohli as the only sportsperson from India, his earnings is recorded of USD 24 million.

The ‘World’s Highest-Paid Athletes 2018’ compilation has no women being featured in the list.
