Global Corporate Funding in Solar Sector $5.3 Billion in First Half of 2018

Total global corporate funding in solar sector touched $5.3 billion in the first half of this year, up by 15 per cent over last year’s funding during the same period.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, corporate funding increased in the April-June period of this year with $2.8 billion in 34 deals compared to the $2.5 billion in 44 deals in January-March 2018.

Among the significant deals in India during the second quarter of this year, azure Power raised $135 million in debt financing from a consortium of development finance institutions to finance around 200 MW of Azure Power’s rooftop solar PV projects across India.

Globally there were a total of 46 solar M&A transactions in the January-June 2018, compared to 41 transactions in the same period a year ago. Some of the noted Indian M&A deals include Hinduja Group, acquiring Kiran Energy, and ReNew Power taking over solar and wind energy project developer Ostro Energy valued at close to $1.63 billion and was supported with financing of $247 million from the Canada Pension Plan.


India opens its largest visa centre in Bangladesh

India inaugurated its largest visa centre in the world in Dhaka to reduce the waiting time for applicants. Applicants from Bangladesh constitute one of the largest numbers of visitors from a single country to India. Last year, India the country issued 1.4 million visas to Bangladeshi nationals.

Union Home minister Rajanth Singh inaugurated the centre along with his Bangladeshi counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan.

The new integrated state-of-the-art Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) spread in an 18,500 square feet commercial area at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka will replace all the existing centres (Motijheel, Uttara, Gulshan and Mirpur Road) in Dhaka in two phases.

Home Ministers also presented a five-year multiple-entry tourist visa to a Bangladeshi national.


SEBI proposes tighter rules for Auditors

SEBI has proposed stringent rules in relation to laws governing auditors and other individuals appointed to oversee auditing functions at various listed entities. The Kotak committee convened to improve the Corporate governance sphere in 2017, recommended said the SEBI be empowered to act against auditors and other third-party individuals or firms with statutory duties under the securities law.

The proposal is being made after $2 billion loan fraud at the state-run PNB was left unnoticed for several years.

There exist no direct regulators to oversee the functioning of different professionals including CAs, CS, monitoring agencies and valuers. Other institutions such as credit rating agencies, merchant bankers, custodians etc. are regulated as well as register under the SEBI’s framework.

Through the new listed amendments, auditors would need to ensure that certificate and reports issued by them are true and they need to exercise all care and due diligence.

  • SEBI is the regulator for the securities market in India.
  • Securities and exchange Board of India (SEBI) was first established in the year 1988 as a non-statutory body for regulating the, securities market. It became an autonomous body by The Government of India on 12 May 1992 and given statutory powers in 1992 with SEBI Act 1992 being passed by the Indian Parliament.
  • SEBI has its headquarters in Mumbai, and has Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Regional Offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Ahmedabad respectively.
  • It has opened local offices at Jaipur and Bangalore and is planning to open offices at Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar, Patna, Kochi and Chandigarh.

Indian Medical Association signs pact with Centre

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has signed an agreement with the Centre on facilitating implementation of Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM).

Finance minister Arun Jaitley in this year’s budget announced annual insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh for hospitalisation for poor and vulnerable families, benefiting 10.74 crore families.

Government will be empanelling hospitals, both public and private where people will be provided cashless treatment.

IMA will be the public private interface for national health protection scheme (NHPS).

The National Health Agency (NHA) under Union health ministry launched pilot for Beneficiary Identification System (BIS), tallying with Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) and Rashtriya Swasthya Beema Yojna (RSBY) data base.

  • It is a program which aims to provide a service to create a healthy, capable and content new India.
  • It has two goals of creating a network of health and wellness infrastructure across the nation to deliver comprehensive primary healthcare services and also to providing insurance cover to at least 40 per cent of India’s population which is majorly deprived of secondary and tertiary care services.

  • IMA is a national voluntary organisation of Doctors of Modern Scientific System of Medicine in India, which looks after the interest of doctors as well as the well-being of the community at large.
  • It was established in 1928 as the All India Medical Association, renamed “Indian Medical Association” in 1930.
  • With over 220,000 member doctors through more than 1,700 active local branches in 29 States and Union Territories in India, it is the largest association of physicians and medical students in India.
