Recently a research study revealed that humans and other mammals possess an antiviral gene which is capable of stopping viruses from replicating.

A group of Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine discovered the secret to the gene’s success. The research found that the compound, called ddhCTP, which disrupts the replication machinery of Zika virus. The compound is also capable of attacking many disease-causing viruses.

The current study reveals that viperin catalyzes the conversion of a nucleotide called CTP (cytidine triphosphate) into a structurally similar compound, or analog: the nucleotide ddhCTP, a previously undescribed molecule that sabotages viral replication.

International Space Station (ISS) launches Remove Debris mission

International Space Station (ISS) has started to clear space junk using harpoons, guide sails and dragnets, called it Remove Debris mission, with its experiments in low-Earth orbit (LEO).

Remove Debris is the first time attempt to actively clear space debris from LEO, which is about 160 to 2,000 km above Earth surface.

The ISS has used its 17-metre-long robotic Canadarm2 to release the Remove Debris to start its mission. This is the largest payload that the ISS has launched till now.The mission was put together by scientists and engineers at the University of Surrey.

NASA estimates that there are at least 500,000 pieces of junk up there and about 20,000 that is about the size of a softball, or bigger than a cricket ball and travelling at over 28,000 km per hour, which is dangerous enough to obliterate satellites. At these high velocities, even millimeter sized flecks of paint can cause serious damage to objects in space.

ISO nods to rename Bengali script as Bengali/Assamese script

The London sitting of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Working Group-II discussed the possibilities of providing an independent slot for the Assamese script in the Unicode Consortium and agreed to rename the Unicodes attached to the Assamese script from its present Bengali script to Bangla/Assamese script.

It also decided to review this decision provided the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) sends a fresh recommendation for providing a separate slot for Assamese script in the Unicode.

The script of a language has been provided with an independent chart of Unicodes for its characters by the Unicode Standard Consortium. This allows the data to be transported through many digital platforms and devices. Till now, Assamese script does not have its own identity in the digital world and was using Bengali script for that purpose.

Asam Sahitya Sabha president Dr ParamanandaRajbongshi said the Indian representatives, which raised the issue before the Working Group-II, included Bureau of Indian Standard official Mani Kandan, DrRajbongshi, Asam Sahitya Sabha’s former president Dr Dhruvajyoti Bora, Prof SikharSarma of Information Technology Department, Gauhati University, and AMTRON Managing Director MK Yadav.

  • Unicode’s success at unifying character sets has led to its widespread use in the internationalization and localization of software.
  • The standard has been implemented in many recent technologies, including XML, the Java programming language, Swift, and modern operating systems.
  • Technical decisions relating to the Unicode Standard are made by the Unicode Technical Committee (UTC).
