Rs 11 Cr Sanctioned for Sensor Barriers in Kaziranga: Assam Tells NGT

The Assam government on Wednesday told the National Green Tribunal that it has sanctioned a budget of Rs 11 crore for installation of sensor-operated automated traffic barriers to control the death of animals in road accidents near the Kaziranga National Park.

The state government informed a bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim that the matter was pending approval in the assembly which is currently holding its budget session. The Assam government also told the tribunal that it would start issuing tenders for the installation of sensor barriers in six areas inside the national park within four weeks from today once the assembly clears it.


All Genuine Indians to be Part of NRC in Assam

Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said a part draft of the NRC, covering 1.90 crore people out of the 3.29 crore applicants in Assam, was published on December 31, 2017, including the names of those applicants in respect of whom the entire process of verification was completed.“The remaining applicants are under various stages of scrutiny and after their verification is completed, another draft NRC will be published.

The final NRC will contain the names of all genuine Indian citizens in the state of Assam,” he said, replying to a written question.The NRC in Assam is being updated as per the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. Ahir said the work was being carried out in a fair and objective manner.

The updation of the NRC is being monitored by the Supreme Court.


Sukhad Yatra App prepared by NHAI

Sukhad Yatra mobile application has been prepared by National Highways Authority of India, NHAI, to empower the Highway user. The key feature of the app includes provision for the user to enter road quality-related information or to report any accident or pothole on the highway. It also provides users with real-time data related to waiting time expected at Plazas and various facilities like points of interest, highway nest/nest mini, etc., available across the highway.Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Nitin Gadkari launched a mobile App and Toll-free Emergency number for Highway users tomorrow in New Delhi.

A toll-free number, 1033, will enable users to report an emergency condition, or highway-related feedback, across the highway. The service has also integrated with various ambulance/tow away services along the road to ensure rapid response time in emergency.

According to Forbes’ 2018 ‘World’s Billionaires’ list, Mukesh Ambani’s net worth has soared to $40.1 billion, making him the richest Indian for the 11th year in a row, while Amazon founder Jeff Bezos toppled Bill Gates as the world’s wealthiest person.

Mukesh Ambani leads Indians in Forbes’ Billionaires List with net worth of USD 40.1 billion. He secured 19th global rank on the list of 2208 billionaires worldwide. In 2017, he ranked 33 with USD 23.2 billion wealth.

Women's Day globally celebrated

The International Women’s Day 2018 was observed across the world on March 8, 2018 with an aim to empower women in all settings, be it rural and urban, and celebrate the activists who are working constantly to assert women’s rights and realize their full potential.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2018 was ‘Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives’.

  • International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year.
  • It is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights.
  • While the first observance of a Women’s Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York, March 8 was suggested by the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference to become an “International Woman’s Day.”
  • After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there.
  • The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

Balkrishna Doshi, the first Indian architect to won Pritzker Prize

Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi, a pioneer of low-cost housing design, won the prestigious Pritzker Prize. He is the 45th Pritzker laureate and the first from India.Doshi began studying architecture in 1947, the year India gained independence.

Doshi was recognised for his exceptional work, his commitment and dedication to his country and its communities and for his influence as a professor. With this, Doshi became the first Indian to win the Pritzker Prize, the premier global award for architecture.

  • Founded in 1979 by Jay A. Pritzker and his wife Cindy, the award is funded by the Pritzker family and sponsored by the Hyatt Foundation.
  • It is considered to be one of the world’s premier architecture prizes, and is often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture.
  • The recipients receive US$100,000, a citation certificate, and since 1987, a bronze medallion.

Avani Chaturvedi  becomes India’s first woman fighter pilot

Flying officer Avani Chaturvedi is the first Indian woman pilot in the Indian Air Force to complete a solo flight in a MiG-21 Bison fighter aircraft.

Chaturvedi flew solo in a MiG-21 Bison fighter aircraft over Jamnagar Air Base on February 19, 2018, for around 30 minutes.

She is among the first batch of three women officers who were commissioned as fighter pilots in the IAF in June 2016.


90th Academy Awards(Oscar ) declared – 'The Shape of Water' Best Film

The 90th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 2017. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel hosted for the second consecutive year, making him the first person to host back-to-back ceremonies since Billy Crystal in 1997 and 1998. The Shape of Water won a leading four awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro.

Dunkirk won three awards; Blade Runner 2049, Coco, Darkest Hour, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won two awards each.

I, Tonya, Get Out, Call Me by Your Name, A Fantastic Woman, Icarus, Phantom Thread, Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405, The Silent Child, and Dear Basketball received one award each.

The 90th Academy Awards, popularly known as Oscar Awards, were conferred on March 4, 2018 (March 5 as per Indian time). The nominees were announced on January 23, 2018 through a global live stream from the Academy. While the movie ‘The Shape of Water’ led all nominees with thirteen nominations, Dunkirk came in second with eight, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri came in third with seven.
