7th Women Science Congress - Imphal

The 7th edition of the Women science congress was formally inaugurated at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University, which is currently hosting the 105th Indian Science Congress.During the five-day programme, the focus will be on various scientific disciplines and how they can connect with the society.


KUSUM Scheme to Install Grid Connected Solar Plants in Rural India

The Indian government is in process of formulating ‘Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (KUSUM) scheme’to harness solar power for rural India. The scheme will allow to setup grid-connected solar plants in rural areas.

KUSUM will build 10,000 MW solar plant and provide 1.75 million off-grid agricultural solar pumps. The program aims to boost farmers’ income as they can sell their additional power to the main grid produced by solar plants located on their lands.


Yi Gang appointed as the head of China’s Central Bank

China has appointed US-trained economist, Yi Gang as the governor of China’s Central Bank.He will be succeeding longtime governor Zhou Xiaochuan.The Chinese legislature approved the appointment of Yi Gang, a veteran deputy central banker who is known to foreign companies, investors and regulators as head of China’s foreign exchange regulator.Yi, 60, received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and taught at Indiana University.Zhou, who is retiring after a record 15 years in the post, is the most prominent Chinese figure in global financial circles.

Powers of China’s Central Bank governor are limited despite the position’s high profile.Unlike other central banks of major economies, the People’s Bank doesn’t make monetary policy. Instead, its mission is to carry out policy made by an official body the identity of whose members is secret.


Indo-French Naval exercise "Varuna 18" started

The first phase of Indo-French joint naval exercise Varuna 2018 kickstarted at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) in Vasco, Goa. The exercise is being held in the Arabian Sea off the Goa coast.The second and third phases of the exercise will be held at the Chennai coast in April 2018 and in La Reunion Island in May 2018, respectively.


Singapore is World’s most expensive city

Singapore has been dubbed the world’s most expensive city to live in for the fifth year running in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Worldwide Cost of Living 2018 survey.

The EIU’s annual ranking compares the prices of over 150 items in 133 cities around the world, such as bread, wine, cigarettes and petrol. It is designed to help hiring managers calculate fair salaries when relocating their employees overseas.


ISRO’s first woman scientist Mangala Mani spend 403 days in Antarctica

At 56 years of age, Mangala Mani, ISRO’s first woman scientist spent over 403 days in Antarctica.Mangala Mani was part of a 23-member expedition team that went to India’s research station, Bharati, in November 2016. Dr Y V N Krishnamurthy, the director of Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), told “Mangala and her team operated and maintained the Indian research station and collected satellite data.Unlike Hyderabad, where only two or three orbits are visible, Antarctica (south pole) is the place from where one can observe 14 orbits. The loads of space data are downloaded at the Antarctica station and sent to the Hyderabad center via the communication satellite link for processing and distribution to users.

Mou Signed to boost North-East tourism

Online market place and hospitality facility provider Airbnb has engaged four Memorandum of Understandings to boost India’s North-East tourism. The Memorandum of Understandings were inked under guidance of Ministry of Development of North East Region. They were contracted on behalf of North Eastern Council, North East Rural Livelihood Project, North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project and North East Tourism Development Council.

The Memorandum of Understandings focuses at creating hospitality small-businesspersons across important destinations in North-East India. They search for influence community resources and suitable local resources-based technology for progress. Under Memorandum of Understandings, NEC, NETDC and Airbnb had decided to increase tourism in North-East India through Airbnb’s global platform.

They will also upgrade quality of homestay provisions and unique assets in NER and provide andencourage outstanding tourism resources. They will also coordinate to upgrade regulatory environment for home-sharing in North-East.


105th  Indian Science Congress (ISC) concluded at Manipur University 

The 105th Indian Science Congress (ISC) concluded at the campus of the Manipur University. Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla, Speaker of Manipur Assembly Yumnam Khemchand, general president of the Indian Science Congress Association Dr Achyuta Samanta, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof AP Pandey, ISC organising secretaries Prof Arun Kumar and Prof W Vishwanath, and others functionaries of the ISCA attended the closing function.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Dr Najma Heptulla said that scientists and experts attending the ISC would take forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to extend research from the laboratory to land when they go back to their respective destinations.Besides holding scientific discussions and knowledge sharing by scientists and experts from various parts of the country and abroad through 14 different science sections, Children’s Science Congress, Women’s Science Congress and Science Communicators’ Meet were also organised as part of the ISC after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the congress on March 16.

Imphal became the second city in the North East to host the prestigious event after Shillong in 2009.


President  Ram Nath Kovind issues Rs 1,000 memorial coins On Nabakalebar  festival  

President Ram Nath Kovind has issued Rupees 1,000 and Rupees 10 memorial coins on the eve of Nabakalebar festival at a function organised in Puri, Odisha. These coins were issue to spot the festival which is a symbolic regeneration of sibling divinities including Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.

Nabakalebara festival is a prehistoric ceremony that is celebrated in the Shree Jagannath Temple at Puri, Odisha at predefined-time as per the Hindu Calendar. Naba known as new and Kalebara means body. In this festival, the statues of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra and Sudarshan are substituted by new statues as it is thought that Lord Shree Jagannath adorns fresh body during Nabakalebara.It is frequently celebrated in every 12-19 years grounded on the promising 2 months of Ashadha in a year known as Purusottam month according to the Hindu calendar.


Bhawana Kanth is the second women pilot of Indian Air Force to fly solo 

Bhawana Kanth, the flying officer became the second Indian Air Force pilot to fly a fighter aircraft solo.She flew in a MiG-21 “Bison” Aircraft from Ambala Air Force Station. The Bison has the highest landing and take-off speed in the world with 340kmph.

Avani Chaturvedi was the first Indian women to fly a fighter aircraft solo.
